General - Is my image editing software a piece of junk?

I am using Fireworks MX from about 10 years ago... If I crop a jpeg that is 1.8MB and save it again as a jpeg at 100% it turns out to be nearly 5MB.

Thanks, I figured as much. I'll get something better before I upload any more. I couldn't find anything about cropping preferences, should I:
a) crop black borders only, regardless of the final shape
b) crop black borders making sides equal and top & bottom equal
c) same as b, but attempt to do this with a specific proportion in mind?
